Indoctrination

Indoctrination refers to teaching someone doctrines or ideas without the active participation of the student. What this means is that the student is not given the opportunity to question the teacher on what they are teaching and is expected to follow the instructions given by the teacher blindly.

This kind of teaching is not commonly seen in academic institutions. It is quite a dangerous way of exchanging information because it forces the other person into a monotonous world view which results in their ideas being created from an echo chamber perspective that they will find difficult to get out of once they are set into it.

The younger the person is while being indoctrinated with a certain set of belief systems, the deeper they will believe in those ideas and the harder they will be to be talked out of it. The idea behind indoctrination is not the imparting of knowledge but the repetition of an idea or belief system to someone until they accept it without question or criticism. It does not create a sustainable framework where more information can be acquired, it only creates a brittle skeleton that crumbles when questioned ever so slightly. It is not an effective means of imparting knowledge to the youth and academic institutions around the world do not use this as a means of education because it prohibits intellectual development of the student as well as breeds fanaticism towards a certain set of ideas.

Awareness should be given to students about the negative impacts of indoctrination and how a healthy learning environment always encourages people to question what they learn and how that is truly the intellectual way forward
