The National Entrance Screening Test, popularly referred to as the NEST Exam, is an annual college entrance examination in India that is conducted for admission into the National Institute of Science Education and Research, or NISER for short, Bhubaneswar, as well as the Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences Mumbai. These two institutes make use of the NEST exam as a sole criterion for admission to their UG programs. Additionally, the Integrated Science Education & Research Center, or ISERC for short, of the Visva-Bharati University has been making use of the merit list of NEST for admission into its UG program.
If you look into the history of the exam, it is clear that obtaining a seat in NISER has become highly competitive ever since 2018. From a pool of about 80,000 applicants across the nation, only 0.5 percent qualify for admission. As of 2018, the total intake for the National Entrance Screening Test is 200+2 students and 45+2 students respectively out of which two seats in each college are reserved especially for students that belong to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. NEST is conducted in both English and Hindi language.
