Academic writing is a formal style of writing used almost exclusively in universities and scholarly publications. It can be seen mostly in books and journal articles on academic topics. When writing academic essays, research papers, and dissertations, the writer will be expected to do so in an academic style. Academic writing follows a similar writing process as other types of texts, but it dictates certain conventions that need to be strictly followed when it comes to content, structure, and style.
One of the most important things to note about this style of writing is that it should be 100% formal and truly unbiased. All the claims made in the paper, journal, essay, etc. need to be properly sourced to make sure that all the information on it is based on factual evidence rather than the author’s preconceived notions. That being said, it is extremely important to make sure that the communication language used does not have cliches, informal tones, or slang in it.
Unlike other forms of writing, academic writing follows a strict structure that is non-negotiable. The structure should make the purpose of the text obviously evident. Starting with a thesis statement or research question, build a strong argument towards what you are proposing and make it as clear as possible. The organization of the text in such a way also helps the writer focus only on one idea at a time and hence make their arguments more profound and distinct.
There are certain conventions that need to be followed strictly without compromises such as spacing, punctuation, abbreviation, numeral, and capitalization conventions. One must even make sure to double-check the spellings (UK or US English) before publishing. In some cases, there are many acceptable approaches that can be chosen. Make sure that the same rules are applied throughout consistently, and carefully proofread the text before submission.
