The Common Admission Test or CAT exam is a management aptitude test. A candidate has to clear the CAT Exam to get admission to the MBA courses offered by the twenty IIMs in the country as well as over thousand two hundred B-schools. More than 2 lakh candidates apply for the CAT exam every year. The CAT question paper is created on the CAT Exam Syllabus. There are both MCQs & non-MCQ questions in the exam. The syllabus of the CAT 2022 exam has remained the same for more than the last ten years. Here are the three main sections as per the CAT Exam Syllabus:
- Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC) – This includes topics like reading comprehension, para Jumbles, Para Summary, and Odd Sentence Out
- Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR) – This section consists of Set Theory (Variables), set theory+puzzles, Coding-Decoding & Puzzles with Additional Data
- Quantitative Aptitude (QA) – This section has topics that include Number System, Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry and Mensuration

The difficulty level of the exam is generally considered moderate to high. Other than for MBA programs, the CAT score is valid also valid for admission to Executive MBA exams, Ph.D., and FPM programs. The duration of the exam is 120 minutes, with each section getting 40 minutes.
