The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, or as it is commonly called, the GSEB, is an educational body that is run by the government of Gujarat and is responsible for determining the policy-related, cognitive, intellectual, and administrative direction of the secondary and higher secondary educational system of the state takes.
The main responsibilities of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board include academics, research and development, and conducting examinations. It is also responsible for the registration and administration of secondary and higher secondary schools in the state of Gujarat.
The GSEB was formed based on ‘The Gujarat Secondary Education Act 1972’. It is responsible for conducting the state-level exam. The main academic task of GSEB is the preparation of syllabus for secondary schools as well as the recommendation of textbooks to be taught in government schools and registered private schools. It also performs the duties of recognition of new schools, inspections of various schools, and performance evaluation of schools.
The GSEB Board conducts two main examinations:
- The Secondary School Certificate exam for Standard 10, and
- The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination for classes XI and XII
The GSEB also includes 4-semester type examinations and is conducted within the state of Gujarat. It also holds a Talent Search for students studying in VIII & IX standard in five major subjects each year.
In 2016, the GSEB board replaced state-level engineering and pharmacy entrance examinations from the JEE Main to the Gujarat Common Entrance Exam (GUJCET).
