After the nationalization of banks in India back in 1969, Indian banks were in need of expanding their branch network across the country for becoming more accessible to their customers. This required a greater number of staff but recruitment through methods like advertising was not satisfactory. Hence, the banks approached the National Institute of Bank Management (NIBM) to design a testing process through which they would be able to hire proficient candidates. As a result, a small unit called the Personnel Selection Services (PSS) was established for handling these types of projects. A few years later, the PSS was rebranded as the IBPS in 1984.
