Multicultural education refers to giving equal educational opportunities to students, irrespective of their religion, class, caste, creed, race, and ethnicity. In general, the said type of education is based on the principle of educational equality, with a motive to remove all restrictions over educational opportunities due to the student’s background.
Multicultural education is a form of education that encourages diversity by incorporating the beliefs, values, and perspectives of people of different backgrounds, cultures and castes.
There are five dimensions of multicultural education. They are content integration, productive knowledge process, reduction in discrimination, equality and empowering a social culture.
The term content integration in this type of education deals with how teachers use examples of different cultures and groups to shed light on major points and issues within that particular area of subjects. Further, in the productive knowledge process, the teacher helps students develop their skills and expand their knowledge.
The discrimination reduction dimension of this education makes the teachers mentor students to develop a positive attitude towards other religions, backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicities.
The objective of this type of education is to change the negative mindsets to foster a school environment that reflects and appreciates the different cultures and groups at the same level.
Equality, an important aspect of multicultural education, exists when teachers employ teaching methods to show respect towards every culture, ethnicity, and social groups.
