NID is the abbreviation for the famous National Institute of Design. They are a group of autonomous public design schools that are located all across India. There are several NID colleges in India, the location of some of which are given below:
- Ahmedabad, Gujarat
- Gandhinagar, Gujarat
- Bengaluru, Karnataka
- Kurukshetra, Haryana
- Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh
- Jorhat, Assam
- Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
The institutes function as an autonomous body under the DPIIT, or Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, which comes under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. All NID colleges are recognized by the DSIR (Department of Scientific and Industrial Research) which comes under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the government of India, as a scientific and industrial design research organization.
They are considered as Institutes of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, as per the National Institute of Design Act, 2014. To get into the National Institute of Design, students need to appear for an entrance exam. It is the Design Aptitude Test (DAT), also popularly referred to as the National Entrance Examination for Design (NEED). It is a National level entrance exam that is organized for admission to UG and PG courses. It is conducted separately by each NID every year. The courses are called B.Des and M.Des, and the exams are conducted in a total of 12 exam centers across India.
