82 | Navbodh Uni Practical Chemistry : B.Sc. Third Year, Procedure : Dissolve 2gm of acetanilide in 10 ml of glacial acetic acid in a 100 ml, wide mo coni flask and cool it in an ice bath. Mix Iml of bromine with 5ml of, glacial acid and transfer it either in a separating funnel. Add bromine solution in, acetanilide very slowly in drops and with constant shaking. After all the bromine, solution been added, the solution becomes orange in colour. Allow the reaction mix-, ture to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes with occasional shaking. Pour the con-, tents, with stirring, to about 100 ml ice cold water. Filter the product and wash thoroughly, with cold water, Crystallise the product from alcohol or rectified spirit. Dry and weigh and, take its melting point., Melting point :, 167°C., Yield, 3-5 gm.
