VASCULAR SURGERY NOTES… PART 3, Coaractation of aorta…, Aortic coaractation can be seen at any level of the, aorta., But most common location is postductal, just distal, to Ligamentum arteriosum., The preductal type occurs immediately proximal to, to the Ligamentum., There is normal physiologic Obliteration of the, ductus arteriosus., It is thought that oxygen sensitive muscle tissue, from the ductus arteriosus is incorporated into the, wall of aorta., The smooth muscle which constricts when exposed, to high oxygen tension, results in narrowing of, aorta at this level., Relative ischemia of the body below the, constriction stimulates development of collateral, vessel.

Radiographically , notching on the inferior aspects, of 3rd to 8th ribs may be seen as a consequence of, of increased collateral blood flow in the intercostal, arteries., , In the below figure.. Coaractation of aorta is, identified by arrow. Note the enlarged great, vessels. The right internal mammary (arrowhead),, a major collateral vessel to the lower portion of, body is very visible and enlarged.
