LESSON -17, WORKING OF THE UNITED, NATIONS, , The United Nations has six major organs. They are the General Assembly,, the Security Council, The Secretariat, the Economic and Social Council, the, International Court of Justice and the Trusteeship Council. These organs, perform different functions., THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, The General Assembly is the main organ of, the United Nations (U.N.) It is like the, parliament of our country. It is made up of, all 193 member countries. Each country has, one vote. The General Assembly meets, once a year, usually in the month of, September., Members decide routine matters with a, simple majority. It also approves the budget of the United Nations., The Members of the General Assembly elect one of the members as the, president and one as the Vice President.

THE SECURITY COUNCIL, The Security Council is the most powerful, organ, , of, , the, , United, , Nations., , It, , is, , responsible for maintaining peace. The, Security Council meets whenever there is, a threat to peace. The decisions of the, Council are final and all the members have, to accept them. The Security Council has, 15 members. Five of them are permanent, members., These are the United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These members have the veto power, It means, any of these members can overrule any majority resolution. To, pass any resolution, all the permanent members must vote in its favour. The, other ten members are elected, each for two years., THE SECRETARIAT, The Secretariat includes the staff members who, carry out day to day work of the U.N. about 40,000, people are employed by the Secretariat and they, work all over the world. The head of the, Secretariat is the Secretary General. He or she is, appointed by the General Assembly on the, recommendation of the Security Council, for a, period of five years, He or she brings to the, Security Council any matter related to peace and security. countries have a conflict, he or she tries to bring them together for, discussion., THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL (ECOSOC), The, , Economic, , and, , Social, , Council, , (ECOSOC) looks after economical, social, and cultural programmes of the U.N. it, provides help to the developing countries for, the progress of education, health and, culture. It also sends food, clothes and, medicines to the people affected by natural calamities. The headquarters of, the ECOSOC is in New York., THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE, The International Court of Justice is also called the ‘World Court’ It is the, legal organ of the U.N. It has 15 judges. They are elected by the Security, Council and the General Assembly for a period of 9 years. The court hears, disputes among the members of the U.N. The court has its headquarters in, the Hague, in the Netherlands., THE TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL, The trusteeship Council was established to look after those regions of the, world which were not independent. At that time, there were eleven such, countries or regions. All of them have got independence now. So this organ, has been declared as a non-functional organ.
