Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw’s role model was her father who inspired her to strive for excellence, and be second to, none., 3. As a child, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw was fascinated by science., 4. Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms or systems to manufacture, newer and better, products., 5. Biocon was born in 1978 in a makeshift office in a garage in Bengaluru., 6. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 1989., B. 1. As a child, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw would read up on science, particularly a series called, Understanding, Science which explained things so simply that anyone could understand them. She learned a lot, on her own, regarding biology through that series., 2. When she returned to India after completing her education in Australia, she was looking, forward to leading a, brewery in the country. To her disappointment, she found that there were no jobs for women in, the brewing, industry in India., 3. Biocon’s initial goal was to ‘green the world’. Kiran and her team used biotechnology to, produce eco-friendly, industrial enzymes for use by food and textile makers. In time, Biocon became the biggest, enzymes-maker in, India., 4. Biocon today makes high-quality medicines for diseases like diabetes and cancer at the, lowest cost so that, even the poor are able to afford it not only in India but around the world. Many people are now, able to access, medicines that could previously be only afforded by the rich., 5. Biocon Foundation was established to use a part of the profits of Biocon to help the poor and, the needy. It, brings in improvements and development in the areas of healthcare, education and civic, infrastructure, thus, making a difference to the lives of many rural communities.
